Talented women at the Atfaluna Society for Deaf Women and Children have created these lovely embroidered bags for the Collection – a project that enables them to both break the barrier of silence and support their families through the fine tradition of Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery.

Palestinian embroidery is reputed to have originated 3000 years ago – with only one kind of cross stitch used in varying patterns and colors that would be familiar to a Palestinian woman as impressions of their daily surroundings. Some geometric designs symbolized peace, good health, hope and prosperity, whilst others represented swans, birds of paradise, foreign moons, damask roses, etc.. Often, the colors and patterns chosen would reflect a woman’s social standing, marital status and wealth in the community.

Today, about 1.6 million Palestinians live in Gaza – over half of them as refugees living in camps. The Atafaluna Society for Deaf Children with whom we have partnered on this initiative is a non-profit organization that has supported thousands of deaf children and their families since 1992. Through a strong program of vocational training including handcrafts, they have been able to integrate disabled, marginalized people into the community in significant ways. Today, about 150 deaf embroiderers are able to work from their home and create these masterpieces of embroidered designs.
