In a beautiful palette of rich earth tones, this gorgeous hand-woven pillow cover has been woven on ancient bamboo looms by women weavers of the Bodo tribes from Assam, India.
Indigenous tribal motifs and Bodo design elements inspired by the local landscape are incorporated into the design and offer some insight into the daily lives of the women. For instance, depicted in the weave are the pointed arrow shapes of the leaves of a vegetable which when cooked with Indian lentils adds a sharp, tangy flavor to the dish.
The Bodo weavers cooperative was formed as a project of a local non-governmental organization to tap into the existing skills of Bodo weavers and expand income opportunities for women. They made a commitment to work specifically with the poorest of the weavers and today, the group has steadily grown forming a trust employing over one-hundred local weavers.
