ABOUT THE ARTISANS
The artisan cooperative that makes this beautiful piece of jewelry is located in Santiago Atitlan, in the highlands of Guatemala. Not only are the artisans paid fair wages, but the cooperative uses the profits to help fund an elder program in the community, which provides meals three times a week to impoverished elders, many of whom otherwise have no food to eat. The majority were widowed during the genocide in the 1980's, so this is an extraordinary community service.
