ABOUT THE ARTISANS

This piece of jewelry was handmade in a fair trade women's cooperative near Taxco, Mexico.  Silver jewelry in Mexico is traditionally made by men, but this group consists of 12 women in villages outside of Taxco who learned their craft either from their fathers or other women.  Most of the women are single mothers, many of whom have never learned to read or write.  The women are now able to export their products while earning a fair wage, which has greatly improved their livelihood.  They work from home so can take care of their children while working.
