We just love this stunning, contemporary necklace, handmade by HIV positive women in Ethiopia out of recycled artillery shells. It features a circular silver pendant and small beads strung on a black waxed cotton cord. It is fully adjustable so can be worn long or short. Since each pendant is handmade there will be variations in the color of the metal. It has more of an antiqued look, rather than shiny silver.
Pendant measures 2" around.
Adjusts from 15-24" long.
Made of silver-plated nickel beads and waxed cotton cord.
Please note: Due to the nature of the artillery shell beads, there may be slight imperfections in the metal and the silver may darken with age to an antiqued look which many people love. To keep the silver brighter the jewelry is best kept in a zip lock bag. It can be cleaned with white vinegar.
ABOUT THE ARTISANS
This artisan group in Ethiopia is one of our favorite new groups we are featuring. In the mountains of Ethiopia farmers find old bullet casings from previous wars and melt them down to be re-purposed into beautiful beads. The jewelry is then designed and handcrafted in a fair trade cooperative consisting of 150 women who are either HIV positive or suffering from fistula due to genital mutilation. The cooperative has not only given the women employment and access to quality healthcare, but has provided hope and a sense of dignity.
