ABOUT THE ARTISANS

This bag was handmade by women artisans in a fair trade cooperative in Delhi, India. This large cooperative of 4,900 women sets the standard for what fair trade should look like.  The artisans use recycled materials whenever possible and the women are paid 3x the minimum wage in India.  They receive health insurance and educational scholarships, as well as financial literacy and vocational skills training. The cooperative ensures that the women are able to get bank accounts.  Many of these women are victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, so this work has helped them find a way out of abusive situations.
