ABOUT THE ARTISANS
The artisans who make this scarf are part of a fair trade women's cooperative in the highlands of Guatemala. These extremely talented weavers employ the age-old technique of backstrap weaving, as shown above. Many of the women were widowed during the Guatemalan Civil War and now rely on the sale of their textiles to support themselves and their families. On our visit they described their experiences of hiding for days up in the mountains with no food in order to escape the military. These resilient women are true survivors.
